Population growth rate in India

India is the second most populous country in the world. Its population has been steadily increasing since 1921. Having crossed the mark of 1 billion in 2000 A.D India's population is currently increasing at the rate of 16 million each year and its annual growth rate is 1.93 % as per 2001 census report.


Alarming growth of population has become one of the most formidable problem of India today. • In India Today 30 babies are born every minute 55000 babies are born everyday and about 30 million babies are born in every year.

it is clear from that the population of India has increased by 21% during the decade 1951 - 1961, by 24.8% during the decade 1961-1971,by 24.8% during the decade of 1971-1981 by 23.5% during the decade of 1981-1991 and by 18.5% between 1991-2000. the rate of growth of population as well as the size of the population of India is definitely e very high on the basis of the rate of growth and the size of population one can certainly say that there is population explosion very [i.e., high growth of population] in India.

High growth of population in India

various factors have contributed to the rapid growth of population in India among which the following can be noted:

1) peaceful conditions: for nearly in century 1860-1960 India enjoyed comparative peace without involving Herself in major inter conflicts or was especially after the the establishment of British rule. peaceful condition provide an impetus for over-population.
2) Excess of birth over death: growth of population depend on the axis of births over deaths. birthdate means the number of children born per thousand of living population and similarly the death rate in India is very high at present in stands at 36. 36 death rates has been failing in recent year from 27 in in 1951 to 15 in 1980.
3) progress in medical knowledge and its application has considerable e reduce the death rate it has helped us to control the spread of disease like malaria T. B., Jarvis of positively it has contributed to gather population because thosepositively it has contributed to gather population because those persons saved from the death also produced children to add to the existing numbers.
4) improvement in transport facilities has helped people to  avail of medical and health facility without much difficulty this have saved countless lives and added to the size of the population.
5) improvement in the field of agriculture and industry also contributed to an increase in population. Uncertainties in the field of agriculture have large been removed with the help of science and technology food production has considerably increased industries have been providing employment opportunity 2000 of persons this development have given people the presidence that they can afford to feed more people if they biget.
6) certain social factors like universal marriage child marriage early marriage have also contributed to the problem India's consider marriage as a social obligation and almost all marriageable persons are in married state lifelong bachelors ship is looked down upon particularly for women marriage is almost and incapable publication for this the number of children born per couple is also large.
7) social attitudes of India's also fever and increases in population poverty illiteracy ignorance absence of recreational facilities attitudes of conservatism, orthodoxy feeling of dependence on God essence of resignation to word like looking upon children as old age pension etc are responsible for the rapid growth of population.
8) lack of conscious family planning: there is the lack of conscious family planning on the part of the married people the use of contraceptives is known to the illiterate masses. people feel that more children are wanted for economic purposes.further blind faith in faith and the existence of joint family system induce thoughtlessness in the matter of begetting children.
9) the climate conditions of India are also very conductive and the growth of population the tropical climate stimulates sex urge. Montesquieu said that people of one land are more sex- indulgent. further girls become physically major at an early age ranging from 11 to 15 year of age. immediately after puverty they are pushed into marriage and they begin to bear children child- bearing capacity of woman last in the tropical places.
10) added to this during the earlier days the government it did not take much interest in introducing family planning to show down the rapid growth of population. Though family planning programme was started under the five year planning system proper attention was not given to popularize it in the beginning.people also feel to recognise it importance the result is the phenomenal growth of population.
11) lack of entertainment: it has been observed that people especially in the rural areas have been forced to find entertainment in the absence of proper entertainment facilities this has further aggravated the problem.
